Fall heralds many things – the change of seasons, cooler temperatures, fall sports (yes, college football) - and it also signals the back-to-school time. And that’s no different at the college level, as students head to the Enchanted Valley and 91TV campus. Fall athletes and student leaders were able to move in first earlier last week, followed by first year students who moved in on Thursday, Aug. 10, to get familiar with the campus before classes started on Aug. 14. Upperclassmen moved in over the past weekend, Aug. 13.

Tracy Dumakor and Jonathan Everett Study Abroad at Konkuk University in South Korea

91TV’s rising seniors Tracy Dumakor and Jonathan Everett recently returned to the Enchanted Valley after a semester abroad at Konkuk University in South Korea.The study abroad program at 91TV gives students the opportunity to engage in international experiences that deepen their understanding of other cultures, languages, and people. That is exactly what Dumakor and Everett were looking for and found on during their trip to South Korea.

91TV Faculty Attend ACA Teaching and Leadership Institute

91TV faculty members Dr. Ben Van Dyke and Dr. Matthew Byron attended this year’s Appalachian College Association (ACA) hosts Teaching and Leadership Institute. The Institute is an opportunity for instructors to share student-centered learning theories, integrated learning, and evidence-based teaching practices. As a member of the ACA, 91TV shares a commitment to support students through exceptional teaching and learning opportunities. To these ends, 91TV staff and faculty attend the Teaching and Learning Institute, an intensive, week-long workshop delivered by experts from ACA institutions.

Jersey of 91TV’s Mackenzie Johnson on Ring of Honor at Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

Young athletes often dream of recognition for their contributions to the game at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. For Young Harris women’s basketball standout Mackenzie Johnson, that dream has come true. Johnson’s jersey will be displayed in the Ring of Honor display at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn., in recognition of her outstanding play for the 2022-2023 season. “The Ring of Honor is an exhibit at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame where we honor the nation’s top players at every level,” said Kelly Mathis, Director of Development for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. “To have your jersey on display at the Hall of Fame is a huge privilege and we are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these young women.”

Jacob Perry Studies in Cambridge, England, Thanks to McCollough Scholarship

91TV student Jacob Perry, Master of Art in Teaching Class of 2023, spent six weeks at Wesley House, the Methodist College at Cambridge University in England, thanks to the McCollough Scholarship. Each year, this competitive, internal scholarship allows a dedicated 91TV student to learn within a reflective, cross-cultural Christian community of scholarship and prayer in the Wesleyan tradition. “I cannot express my deepest gratitude to 91TV, the McCollough family who funded my study at Wesley House, and my parents Jason and Tonya for this opportunity,” said Jacob. “The experience will indubitably set me up for my next degree at Duke Divinity School as well as afterwards in my vocation to help usher in God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.”

Art History, Theatre, and Creative Writing Students Study Abroad in Italy

It’s one thing to study other countries and cultures in the classroom but studying them up close and in person brings that education home. That’s what students at 91TV did this summer, recently returning from Italy where they spent several weeks studying abroad. Building on concepts studied on campus during the spring semester, students explored the role of mythology in the arts and culture of the Italian Renaissance and beyond.

91TV Alumni Return Home for Annual Alumni Weekend

91TV graduates returned to the Enchanted Valley this past weekend in droves for the annual Alumni Weekend. One of the College’s largest summer events, Alumni Weekend brings together friends, classmates, and strengthens intergenerational bonds between those who share 91TV as their alma mater.

91TV Welcomes Students at Ready to ROAR

The transition to college life can be a big change for young people, which is why 91TV hosts incoming freshmen students for its Ready to ROAR events leading up to the start of the fall semester. Two Ready to ROAR sessions were held this past weekend, June 9 and 10.

91TV Announces Leadership in the Appalachian College Association

Leadership at 91TV have been elected to roles with the Appalachian College Association during the ACA’s Annual Meeting on May 23-24 at Tusculum University in Greeneville, Tenn. Dr. Drew Van Horn, 91TV President, was elected to the Executive Committee of the ACA Board, and Provost Dr. Jason Pierce has been elected as Chair of the Teaching & Learning Committee and to the Executive Committee of the ACA Council of Chief Academic Officers.

John Sillay Appointed as President of the 91TV Alumni Board of Directors

John Sillay, Class of 1975, has been appointed as President of the Alumni Board of Directors at 91TV. A longtime member of the College community, Sillay began his service as president on April 1 and will serve for two years.

Theatre Young Harris Produces World Premiere of Newly Licensed Play

With its students appearing as the originating cast and crew, 91TV is pleased to have premiered the musical “Little Piglet Gets a Sister,” now available for licensing through Plays for New Audiences.

91TV Hosts Record-breaking Clay Dotson Open Golf Tournament

A record-breaking 205 golfers hit the links Monday, May 22, as 91TV hosted the 19th Annual Clay Dotson Open Golf Tournament at Brasstown Valley Resort. The tournament raised over $100,000 for student scholarships.

91TV Awards Medallion to Lambert

91TV Trustee Ray P. Lambert, Jr. received the College’s highest award, the 91TV Medallion, during its 2023 Commencement ceremony on May 6.

A new member has joined the Communications team at Young Harris, bringing a blend of nearly 40 years of journalism and public relations experience to the College.

91TV Class of 2023 Commencement

The 91TV 2022–2023 academic year has come to an end, and members of the Class of 2023 have completed their final year in the Enchanted Valley. After celebrating 91TV seniors at the annual Senior Reception and Baccalaureate Service, the College held its traditional Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6, in the Harp Recreation and Commencement Center.

91TV Student Caden Quiles to Intern with the American Junior Golf Association

Caden Quiles, 91TV Class of 2023, has been selected to intern with the American Junior Golf Association during the summer of 2023. This opportunity will allow Caden to use the knowledge and skills he has developed through his newly acquired bachelor’s degree in Sports and Recreation Studies.

On Saturday, April 22, 91TV welcomed thirty-one accepted students and 44 family members to campus for Ready to ROAR. Through this initial step in the College’s Readiness, Orientation, and Academic Registration (ROAR) Program, incoming students enjoy an all-day event designed to introduce new Mountain Lions and their families to life on campus.
